Remote working has come a long way

Thankfully the technology that allows this has really matured and there are lots of fantastic options that’ll have you wondering why the heck we actually bother with offices at all any more. We mean, aside from them being a great place for free pens and paperclips.

We’ve put together some of our favourite online meeting, collaboration and remote working tools below. We’re happy to chat with you on what might work for your office and offer a free 1-hour consult for all remote work consultations.

2. Work From Anywhere in the Cloud

After the meetings, everybody has to get back to work. The days of being tied to servers and desktops is long behind us now. Sure enough, lots of offices are still doing it the old school way, but the advantages and cost savings of the latest cloud-based document editing, storage, and collaboration tools is something you should look at.

The two heavy hitters are Microsoft Office 365 and G Suite from Google. Both are built for business and are equally fantastic, the choice comes down to a combination of personal preference and specific business needs. Our clients are pretty much a 50/50 mix. The main benefits we see clients enjoying are collaborating on documents at the same time, working from anywhere on practically any internet connected device, and not needing to bother with software and updates.

Introducing G Suite from Google Cloud. A set of intelligent apps including Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar to connect the people in your company, no matter where in the world they are.

Whether you’re in the office or on the go, you get a familiar, top-of-the-line set of productivity tools. Create, edit, and share from your PC/Mac or your iOS, Android™, or Windows device.

3. Still need to sit at a desk?
Let’s talk about remote desktop

There are still a few things you might need access to your physical computer at your office, and there are lots of ways to reach that remotely as well. Some applications might not fit this category too well, like video editing or graphic design, but something like Quickbooks can easily be accessed remotely and can perform as well as if you’re sitting at your desk.

Remote desktop software is a bit magical, it basically copies your office computer’s screen to your own over the internet. Never rush ahead and set up a remote desktop tool without your company’s consent! Done improperly, it can be a huge gaping hole to your network.

Both Windows and Apple desktops have built-in tools for this, and there are plenty of 3rd party applications like TeamViewer, Connectwise Control, LogMeIn, Chrome Remote Desktop, DWS Remote Control. They all have their pros and cons, it depends on what fits your company and your needs.

In our opinion, it’s best to talk to an IT professional before setting up remote desktop at the office
